The department of Surgery, university of Lagos was founded in 1962, and is one of the oldest departments in the college of medicine, university of Lagos. It also hold the privilege of being the only department that was first headed by the pioneer of the university of Lagos medical school, Prof. Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas, who was the first head of department of surgery. The department grew in leaps and bounds and subspecialty practices were introduced in 1982. Presently there are 8 major units (subspecialties) in the department. However, some units are further subdivided into two teams. These units (and teams) are:
- General surgery (Teams A & B)
- Paediatric surgery
- Orthopaedic & Trauma surgery (Teams A & B)
- Urology (Teams A & B)
- Cardiothoracic & Vascular surgery
- Burns & Plastic surgery
- Neurosurgery
- Otorhinolaryngology
Each of the unit is headed by head of unit, who reports directly to the Head of department of Surgery. The lecturers in these units are responsible for the training, teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the College of Medicine rotating through the department.
There are two clerkships in the department of surgery, consisting of both junior and senior surgical posting. The junior surgical posting (400 Level) consists of 10 weeks rotation through various surgical units and a summative assessment, which marks the End of the posting, is done at the 9th week. The senior posting (600 Level) consists of 12 weeks rotation through different subspecialty units and a summative assessment at 12th week. The postings are integrated sandwiched programmes (clinical – theory – clinical) during which the subspecialties of surgery are taught as mandatory courses. The posting involved period of didactic lectures, clinical ward (+ bedside teaching), teaching at the surgical outpatients clinics, surgical exposure of the students (which also include teaching sessions), tutorials and seminars. The department has continued to forge ahead in teaching, training and mentoring students and resident doctors to achieve their dreams.
