Welcome to Department of Haematology & Blood Transfusion
The Department of Haematology & Blood Transfusion of the College is entrenched in a rich tradition of excellence built upon the legacies of leaders that laid a firm foundation over the years. We are proud of this tradition and it is our goal today to further that reputation by remaining on the cutting edge of new developments in medical education, scientific and clinical research and clinical care.
The Department is strategized to focusing our developmental efforts and resources on the three missions of the department: teaching, biomedical research and clinical service.
The educational mission of the Department continues to be to train the future leaders in academic medicine. This we aim to achieve by continuously adapting our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching methods to meet all laid down standards both locally and internationally.
The Department encourages world class research and recognizes the limitations present in this environment towards achieving this. We thus encourage the use of local content which meet international standards towards achieving our goals of contributing significantly to the body of medical knowledge. The Haematology Department is involved in various research activities which include Sickle Cell Anaemia, Thalassemia, Haemophilia, Thrombophilia, Aplastic anaemia, Leukemia and Lymphomas, ITP etc.
We invite you to learn more about our department’s clinical activities, research and training programs, and our faculty members by exploring this web site. We appreciate your interest and encourage you to contact us for further information.

About the Department of Haematology & Blood Transfusion
Haematology is one of the four sub-specialties of Pathology – a branch of Medical Science that studies mechanisms of disease causation. Other branches of Pathology are Histopathology, Clinical Pathology and Microbiology.
At the inception of the College in 1962, Haematology was taught together with Chemical Pathology as Clinical Pathology. In 1983 the Senate of the University of Lagos created the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and Haematology. The Department is involved in teaching and research activities primarily but it also provides services both Clinical and Laboratory to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Recruitment of blood donors, processing of blood for safety and fractionation of blood for component therapy are some of the key services the department offers to the Teaching Hospital.
The creation of the Department of Haematology and Blood transfusion from the Department of Clinical Pathology, by the senate of the University of Lagos in 1983, Prof. Olu Akinyanju, headed the department and was assisted by Dr. Ibironke Akinsete. Soon this duo was joined by Dr. Olufunmilayo Ajose-Coker and Dr. Walter Eyetsemitan.. The lecturer/consultant staff was strengthened by the appointment of a Research fellow in Haematology and Blood transfusion in person of Mr. Kehinde Macaulay.

He develop the first postgraduate curriculum for the award of M.Sc. in Haematology & Blood Transfusion and also initiated the residency training in Haematology & Blood Transfusion in 1986. Prof. Oluboyede retired from the department in 1988 and Prof. Ibironke Akinsete became the Acting Head of Department.
At various other times Prof. C.C. Okany, Prof. A.S. Akanmu and Dr. V.O Osunkalu, A.A. Adediran and T.A. Adeyemo had acted as Head of Department between 2000 till date.
